If Peter Pan came for you right now – would you go? Would you escape to Neverland?
Join Litmus Theatre for the premiere of When Wendy Grew Up, a new script by acclaimed playwright Jordi Mand (Stratford, Nightwood, Theatre Passe Muraille). This digital theatre experience tells the story of a grown-up Wendy struggling to balance the responsibilities of work, parenting, and caregiving. Wendy is burnt out. When Peter Pan arrives after 27 years of absence, will she choose to escape?
Telling a Story in a Lockdown
The backdrop of this project was the third wave of COVID-19, which is beginning to feel more like a dark distant memory. In the midst of this we asked: How do we tell this story in a lockdown? How do we keep the team safe, yet break free of Zoom squares? How can we help Peter and Wendy connect through a camera, having never acted in the same room?
Our answer was to create a hybrid of solo filming, Zoom performance, and greenscreen video work. It required the skill of new collaborators and many hours of Googling. It forced us to work in a completely new way – outside of our comfort zone – dealing with gaffer tape, lav mics, and continuity, while all the while trying to stay true to Jordi’s story.
